3D printers and Science

One fine day, a friend, Jon, came up to me with a 3D print request. He wanted to print out parts to help in some of his experiments. I asked him to explain and here are his plans for with the printed parts.

A thin film is typically a very thin layer of advanced materials which is generally found in household electronics, batteries and other everyday use items like mirror having a silvered coat on the back, reflection coats on window panes, compact or digital versatile discs, tapes, touch phone screens etc.

Jon was trying to perform tests on a new structure, for which the testing machines in the lab were not suitable. So, he wanted to create a customized interface between the the testing machines to and the new material. That is where the 3D printers came in. He printed out a few parts and tried this out.

Sounds exciting. I hope it works!

Lending Cables and Adapters

Cables You’re probably already aware of our equipment lending program here in the Vitale Digital Media Lab.  But did you know that we lend a variety of cables and video adapters?
Among others, we lend:

  • HDMI cables
  • USB mini and micro cables
  • Audio cables
  • Mac (mini-displayport) video adapters
  • Ethernet cables
  • Mac laptop chargers
  • iPhone chargers (both for new and old models)
  • USB micro phone chargers (for just about every phone EXCEPT the iPhone)
  • …and more!

And if there’s a cable or adapter we don’t have that you want, let us know and we’ll do our best to order it and put it into the system so you can borrow it.

Reserve them online and stop by the lab to pick them up.

Borrow equipment over Thanksgiving Break

tg_break_cameraWant to borrow a video camera, DSLR, projector, or other lab equipment over Thanksgiving? Normally, you can only reserve equipment for 3 days at a time, but since we realize that most Penn folks disappear from campus for longer than that, we’ve decided to permit extended equipment rentals during that time.

Just make a reservation from Wednesday til Saturday then stop by the Vitale Digital Media Lab between 9-5 any weekday, and ask Dave, Tayarisha, or Lindsey to extend your reservation until Monday, December 2.  It’s that easy.

Have a great break!

Equipment Spotlight: Go Pro Hero 3 Video Camera

My favorite new addition to our equipment lending program is the Go Pro video camera.  For those of you who haven’t heard of the GoPro, it’s a small form-factor, wide-angle “wearable” video camera. You can attach it to your head, bike helmet, or wear it on the included chest harness. It includes a water-proof case so that you can use it safely in the rain or under water.  I used it this summer on a trip to the Bahamas and although the footage of me flopping around in the water while snorkeling for the first time is too embarrassing to show here, trust me when I say it turned out quite well.  And Nick used it to film his bike ride from the library to Honest Tom’s.

GoPro Hero 3 Black Edition Video CameraWhen you borrow our GoPro, the kit comes with:

  • Carrying Case
  • Go Pro Hero 3 Black Edition Video Camera
  • Battery
  • External battery bacpac
  • Waterproof Case
  • Chest Strap
  • Head Strap
  • Helmet Strap
  • SDHC Card
  • Micro SDHC adapter
  • 2 J-Mounts
  • a total of 8 Thumbscrews
  • 3-way pivot arm

Watch the GoPro video above to see some of what’s possible with this great little camera.  And be sure to check out our GoPro page to find out more about it and get some pointers on using it at http://wic.library.upenn.edu/wicfacilities/gopro.html

Borrow Equipment Over Thanksgiving Break

Want to borrow a video camera, DSLR, projector, or other lab equipment over Thanksgiving break?  Normally, you can only reserve equipment for 3 days at a time, but since we realize that most Penn students, faculty, and staff disappear from campus from Wednesday until Monday, we’ve decided to permit extended equipment rentals during that time.

Just make a reservation from Wednesday until Saturday, then stop by the Vitale Digital Media Lab between 9-5 today, tomorrow, or Wednesday, and ask Dave, Nick, or Lindsey to extend your reservation until Monday.  It’s that easy.

Have a great holiday!

New Equipment available to borrow

WeNikon D3100 have recently added a second Nikon D3100 DSLR camera to our equipment lending list. This camera can shoot 14 megapixel images that are stored to an SD card. This model has been extremely popular, and we’re happy to have a second one available to lend.

Zoom H2n

In addition, there are several more pieces of equipment to mention. We will be adding 2 new audio recorders, including the Zoom H2n – Zoom’s latest model – and 3 new Canon videocameras. Keep checking the equipment lending page for the new gear coming in and stop by to ask questions about the new items, or any of our other equipment.

Steelcase Demo Table – Testers Wanted

We invite you to come and take a test drive of a demo table from Steelcase. It is here for the next week just outside the entrance to the Vitale Digital Media Lab, 1st floor west of Van Pelt-Dietrich Library Center. We are considering purchase of this unit for one of our group study rooms. It is designed for small-group collaboration. Read the vendor description.

The system has pucks to connect your laptop to control one or both screens. We have some laptops and an iPad2 available in the Vitale Digital Media Lab next door if you would like to borrow them to try at the Steelcase table.

The system autodetects connected computers through a VGA cable and also has an audio cable. So far, we have had success with Mac and PC (Dell) laptops, an iPad2 and an iPhone – we would like to test connectivity to other mobile devices and laptop models.

We would love to hear your comments on its functionality and possible uses.
